How NAICS codes work

NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) is the standard used by federal statistical agencies to classify businesses by their primary line of work. Federal procurement officers assign a NAICS code to each contract opportunity, which determines:

• Small business size standards. The SBA size standard for a "small business" varies by NAICS code (revenue threshold or employee count). Whether you qualify for small-business set-asides depends on your NAICS-by-NAICS status.
• Vendor matching. Agencies route opportunity notifications to vendors who have registered matching NAICS codes in SAM.gov.
• Set-aside eligibility. Some set-aside programs (HUBZone, 8(a), WOSB) have additional NAICS-based eligibility rules.
