Defense FAR Supplement (DFARS)
The Department of Defense supplement to the Federal Acquisition Regulation, adding DoD-specific rules and clauses.
Definition
DFARS extends the FAR for Department of Defense procurement with additional requirements covering cybersecurity (DFARS 252.204-7012 / NIST SP 800-171 compliance), domestic sourcing (Berry Amendment), small-business utilization, supply chain risk management, and many other DoD-specific concerns.
When it applies
Any vendor selling to DoD is subject to DFARS. Cybersecurity compliance (NIST SP 800-171, soon CMMC) is a significant DFARS focus and a common reason small vendors are screened out of DoD opportunities. Berry Amendment compliance restricts foreign-source clothing, food, and certain materials in DoD purchases.
