Federal Identifiers

CAGE Code (CAGE)

A five-character identifier assigned by the Defense Logistics Agency that identifies firms doing business with the US federal government. Required alongside the UEI for SAM.gov registration.

Definition

The Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) code is a five-character alphanumeric identifier maintained by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). The CAGE code identifies your business across federal procurement and supply systems, especially DoD systems. Foreign entities receive an NCAGE (NATO CAGE) code through their home government.

When it applies

CAGE codes are assigned automatically during SAM.gov registration — the registration system requests one from DLA on your behalf. You cannot complete SAM.gov registration without a CAGE code, which typically issues within 3-10 business days. The CAGE code stays with your business for its life; update it when entity information changes materially.
